CareNet Lumberton Opening Satellite in Pembroke Pediatric Clinic

As a Tier 1 county, Robeson County has one of the highest uninsured rates in North Carolina. It is also home to the Lumbee Indian Tribe of North Carolina. The CareNet center in Lumberton, serving Robeson County, has a satellite office in Pembroke, but that office is closing soon. In its place, CareNet will pilot a new program.

Beginning January 1, CareNet Lumberton will partner with Pembroke Pediatrics to provide an in-house therapist to consult with children and their families during doctor visits, as well as provide ongoing therapy when needed. This pilot program for CareNet will be an opportunity to learn and implement a model with other physician practices across the state.

The well-known Pembroke physician, Dr. Joey Bell, Lumbee, approached CareNet to pilot this program. Dr. Bell chose CareNet because of the emphasis of faith-based therapy, which coordinated with his own holistic approach to care – serving mind, body and spirit. This is especially significant as he works with the Lumbee community in Pembroke.

The new therapist who will work at Pembroke Pediatrics is Dr. Tricia Carter, LCSW, also Lumbee. She hopes to engage cultural diversity as part of her care.

Dr. Bell is the brother of Dr. Ronny Bell, Director of the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Wake Forest School of Medicine, which is reducing the gap in health disparities for an increasingly diverse society.
