Gunderson Named Head of Faith and Health Ministries

Wake Forest Baptist Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gary Gunderson as Vice President of Faith and Health Ministries at the Medical Center. He will hold faculty appointments in Public Health Sciences and the Divinity School of Wake Forest University. He will report to the Chief Executive Officer and assume his new duties on July 1.

Gary GundersonDr. Gunderson currently is the Senior Vice President of Faith and Health at Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare in Memphis, Tenn., and also serves on the faculty of Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

In his role at Wake Forest Baptist, Dr. Gunderson will provide leadership and direction for Faith and Health Ministries, oversight of spiritual care services to patients, families and medical center staff, and management and oversight for marketing and public relations services to more than 4,200 Baptist churches with 1.3 million congregants. The four departments he will supervise in the Division of Faith and Health Ministries include CareNet Counseling, the Department of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education, the Center for Congregational Health, and the Department of Church and Community Relations, in addition to many other duties and denominational and judicatory committees.

At Methodist Healthcare, Dr. Gunderson’s work garnered recognition from the World Health Organization, World Council of Churches and the White House under Presidents Bush and Obama. He also is a visiting professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Cape Town. His distinguished divinity and academic career includes serving many years as the Director of the Interfaith Health Program at The Carter Center in Atlanta, Ga., and serving as a senior consultant in its Africa Governance Program.

He holds a BA from Wake Forest University, an M.Div from Emory University, a D.Min from the Interdenominational Theological Center, and a D.Div. (h.c.) from Chicago Theological Seminary.
